ORR - Hyderabad
Hyderabad, the largest city and capital of Telangana, is situated amidst hilly terrains and artificial lakes. Ruled by the Qutub Shahis, the Mughals, and the Nizams, this historic place is commonly known as the City of Nizams or the City of Pearls. At present, the city serves as a major center for the technology industry and is home to many upscale restaurants and shops.
The term Outer Ring Road (ORR) was first conceptualized in India by former Chief Minister of Hyderabad, N. Chandrababu Naidu. He believed it could aid in decongesting the metropolitan regions, which face significant traffic problems, and provide easy access to important urban nodes.
The ORR of Hyderabad is a 158-kilometer road, covering approximately 6,250 acres of land. It is an 8-lane ring road expressway that connects with the Inner Ring Road, 33 Radial Roads, and 20 Interchange Junctions. The Government of Telangana formed a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for the development of the Outer Ring Road, called the “Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited,” a wing of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA). The development of the road has led to a reduction in travel time from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport to cities like Nizamabad and Adilabad, as it connects to National Highway (NH) 44.
Objectives of the Project
- Quick access to important nodes in the city and connection to various urban nodes outside the city by joining the NH and State Highway (SH) network, along with other important city roads.
- Bypass for through traffic on the national highways and state highways, thereby reducing accidents by avoiding the movement of commercial traffic within the city.
- Reduction of congestion in the metropolitan areas and the inner ring road.
- Reduction of overall pollution in the city and promotion of environmental upgradation.
Toll Management Systems (TMS) are installed at 19 interchanges of the ORR, comprising a total of 157 Manual and Touch ‘n Go lanes, as well as 23 Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lanes. Additionally, 648 surveillance system cameras are installed, with an Optical Fiber Cable (OFC) length of 404 kilometers and Network/Wide Area Network/Local Area Network (WAN/LAN) at 676 locations. EFKON’s toll plazas are well-equipped at every interchange on the ORR.
