Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS) and Toll Management Systems (TMS) projects at Noida

Noida (New Okhla Industrial Development Authority) is most commonly known as the satellite city of Delhi and is a part of the National Capital Region of India. It is one of the best-planned cities in India, which is famous for its modern infrastructure and top amenities. Also, ranked as the “Best City in Uttar Pradesh” and considered as India’s greenest city with nearly 50% green cover, the highest of any city in India

The main objectives of Noida Authorities in transforming this green city include:

  • To enhance user road safety and reduce air pollution
  • To reduce the number of road accidents and set-up a quicker emergency response
  • To build effective traffic monitoring systems and enforcement through e-Challans
  • To provide better security to road users and provide accurate crime control

EFKON India has built a comprehensive system for effective highway monitoring, incident, and congestion management in Noida.

Project 1 – Noida Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS)

EFKON India has successfully implemented the Intelligent Traffic Management Systems at NOIDA – Greater NOIDA Expressway. This expressway was built to improve the connectivity between the upcoming important industrial towns of Noida and Greater Noida in the national capital of India.

More than 70,000 vehicles are passing through this expressway daily, with 80% traffic consisting of four-wheelers. Since its inception in 2002, Noida-Greater Noida Expressway has been the site of hundreds of road accidents caused due to speeding, unauthorized parked vehicle, and vehicles travelling in the reverse direction. Moreover, there are initiatives to make this expressway a safe zone for commuters during the night.

Between the stretch of Maha Maya Flyover and Pari Chowk (26.6 kms), EFKON India installed the following ITMS components:

177
fixed and 31 Pan-tilt Zoon (PTZ) cameras for surveillance
15
video incident detection cameras
24
Emergency Call Boxes (ECBs) for direct communication with the traffic management control board
24
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras
13
variable message signs at entry and exit points
1
Meteorological Systems (MET) placed at the start of the stretch near Maha Maya Flyover
60
length of OFC in kms
219
locations for Network/LAN/WAN
1
Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC)
1
Data Centre

The expressway is under surveillance 24/7, which helps curb crime on the expressway. Another essential feature of this system is a mobile application that gives road users live information about any incidents on the highway along with the nearest amenities such as hospitals, petrol pumps, police stations, etc. There is a facility of a hot dial on the mobile application to connect to the control room directly.

The project was awarded as the “Best Intelligent Transport Systems’ by the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD)

Project 2 – Yamuna Expressway Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS)

Yamuna Expressway is a six-lane, 165 km long, controlled-access expressway connecting Greater Noida with Agra. It is India’s one of the longest six-lane controlled-access expressway stretch. To accomplish this project, a statutory body Yamuna Expressway Authority (YEA) was constituted. The project was developed with an idea to not only reduce the travel time but to provide the base for convergence to tourism and other allied industries as well.

The main objectives of the project were to:

  • To provide a fast-moving corridor to minimize the travel time from Delhi to Agra
  • To connect the main townships/commercial centers on the Eastern side of river Yamuna
  • To open up avenues for industrial and urban development of the region
  • To relieve traffic congestion on National Highway – 2 (NH-2)

EFKON India installed the following ITMS components:

566
CCTV cameras for surveillance
3
control room installation
82
Emergency Call Boxes (ECBs)
30
speed enforcement cameras
25
video incident detection cameras
54
lane Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras
14
Variable Message Signs (8 fixed and 6 mobiles)
4
Meteorological Systems (MET)
165
length of OFC in kms
1
ICCC

Data Centre

The project has been instrumental in bringing down congestions because of incidents and accidents due to non-adherence to traffic rules.

Project 3 – Yamuna Expressway Toll Management Systems (TMS)

Yamuna Expressway is a 165 km stretch connecting Greater Noida and Agra, with a total of three main toll plazas. These toll plazas constitute six dedicated Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lanes equipped with RFID transmitters.

EFKON India installed the following TMS components:

  • Toll Booths, User Fair Display (UFD) for toll lane, Automatic Vehicle Classifier (AVC), Lane Communications, Slow Speed Weight-in-Motion (SSWIM), Queue Length Monitoring System
  • Plaza area including Plaza Computer System, Public Announcement System (PAS), Network Equipment, Intercom Supply and 102 cameras for surveillance systems
  • Digital Video Recorder (DVR) and Plaza CCTVs and cameras and ancillary items

The project has been instrumental in providing smooth traffic flow at all the electronic toll collection booths across Yamuna Expressway.
